40 odd years later,
thanks for the recharge, J.J.
Just saw the new "Star Trek" incarnation, wish my eyes were better but I still greatly enjoyed this version of the life altering classic. Lots of trivia in this one, folks.
Star Trek. Wow. When Desi Arnez and Lucille Ball decided to give Gene a chance to produce his 'Wagon Train to the stars' they had no way of knowing what they had wrought and the incredible impact it would have on millions of people. I discovered it at my sisters house. It was "The Man Trap", in color, which mom and I didn't have at home. I was hooked. What followed:
Getting harassed at school, spending all my paper route money on books and models, writing to NBC for Bjo Trimble's 'Save Star Trek' comaign in 69', gritting my teeth when it was cancelled, feverishly looking for ANYTHING Star Trek thereafter, watching ANYTHING that the actors appeared in, hopping a Greyhound to Seattle from Salem to be the first person at the first Star Trek convention at the Seattle Science Center, meeting my future wife there, attending more conventions and spending lots of dough, eagerly following rumors about a movie, a TV series, a movie, a TV series, a mov....., recording Tom Snyders show with Harlan Ellison talking about M..M..Mayans??, and so on. High points: my wife and I ran an international fan magazine, we were on TV from Anchorage to Salem wtn a Star Trek bridge mockup in our recroom and that led to a short job in pre-production on a movie.

So here we are, full circle, back at beginnings. And what a beginning!! I've only seen the movie once and I do have really bad eyes but here is what I caught in J.J. Abrams little trivia feast:
The opening scene with the single nacelle scout ship from Franz Joseph's "Starfleet Technical Manual" which Roddenberry didn't like because you nacelles must be in pairs to work.
The Riverside Iowa mention. We are still getting brochures from Riverside and their yearly celebration as the future birthplace of Captain Kirk. Of course, the movie changed that to 'hometown' since he was born on the ship.
Where was Sam?
The tribute to the animated series and D.C. Fontana's great 'Yesteryear' episode that showed Spock as a child getting his ass whupped by a bunch of not so logical toughs.

I kinda got absorbed after that (resistance is, after all, futile) and will add more after subsequent viewings but the 'lens glare' effect bothers me. i have heard some talk about this including from my wife but there is something familiar about this. On Stephen Colberts show J.J. they hinted about hidden tidbits and I don't think they were talking about Colberts show. One thing for sure, it was on purpose.

But the overall look of the movie was great and the audience totally gets into it. The response warms my heart and, after years of abuse for being an ardent fan, I reel somewhat vindicated.

Thanks, J.J..
